Clemson Women's Volleyball Release

Individual Records Broken
Individually, three of the 1997 Tigers have placed themselves into the individual records. Senior setter Michelle Thieke had an outstanding .818 hitting percentage in Clemson's win against Sam Houston. This hitting percentage is the second best in Tiger volleyball history, behind Heidi Kahl's .910 hitting percentage in 1989 at Winthrop.

Another individual record now belongs to sophomore middle hitter Cindy Stern. Against Mississippi State, Stern tallied ten block assists which ties her for second place with Brenda Mailander. The first slot is held by Julie Marx who accumulated 12 against Bradley in 1989. Stern also placed her name in the third slot for most block assists when she knocked down nine against South Carolina.

The third member to add her name into the match records is sophomore Alison Coday who smashed 31 kills in the match against Florida State. These 31 kills rank second in match records for most kills in a single match. The top slot is held by Robin Kibben and Julie Rodriguez with 32 kills each. Coday also marked the record books when she tallied 67 attempts in a single match against Maryland on October 31st. These 67 attempts place her fourth for most attempts in a single match. The first place slot is currently held by Wendy Anderson who attempted 79 in a single match.

Stern Tallies Three Triple-Doubles
Sophomore Cindy Stern has managed to tally three triple-doubles in 1997. Stern's first two triple-doubles came in the same weekend when the Tigers defeated both Sam Houston (23 kills, 11 digs, 10 blocks) and Mississippi State (12 kills, 10 digs, 11 blocks). Then, in the Tigers' match-up against Maryland (24 kills, 12 digs, 11 blocks) Stern grabbed her third triple-double of 1997.

Stern's three triple-doubles of 1997 mark the fourth of her career and only the 14th in Clemson volleyball history.

Thieke Tallies Triple-Double
Senior setter Michelle Thieke added her name to the elite triple-double club in the Tigers' win over Mississippi State. Thieke grabbed 10 kills, 48 assists, and 14 digs.

The Rare Occurence of Triple-Doubles
It is important to note that triple-doubles have been a rare occurrence in the Tiger record book. Only four other players in the 21 years of Tiger volleyball are part of this elite group.

Two Tigers Chart A Record In Kills
In match records, sophomores Cindy Stern and Alison Coday have both etched their names for most kills in a single game. Stern, a middle hitter, knocked down 11 kills in the first game against Maryland which gives her a tie in the second-place slot.

Coday, an outside hitter, tallied 10 kills in the third game against North Carolina which gave her a tie for the third-place slot.

Coday Tallies Double-Double
Sophomore outside hitter Alison Coday tackled an impressive statistical feat in the Tiger match-up with Maryland. In the five-game match, Coday knocked down 20 kills and 21 digs.

Only five other players in the history of Clemson volleyball have ever accomplished such a feat.

Schulz Grabs Jervey Gym Record
Junior middle hitter Stephanie Schulz took advantage of the home court when she tagged nine block assists in the Tigers win over Duke on September 27th. Schulz's nine block assists mark a Jervey Gym record for most block assists versus an ACC opponent.

Clemson Claims Three Championships
In the 21 years of Clemson volleyball, only two other teams have won three tournaments in a single year. This season, the Tigers have been champions of the Auburn War Eagle Invitational, Clemson's Big Orange Bash, and the SMU Tournament.

Tiger Team Match Bests
In 1997 volleyball matches, the Tigers have placed themselves into the record books many times. Clemson tagged a total of 30 block assists in its first match of the season against Auburn. These 30 block assists earned Clemson the fifth-place slot for most block assists in a single match.

The 1997 Tigers once again added their names to the records in their match against SMU. In the five-game match at SMU, Clemson accumulated a total of 92 kills, enough to place them in a tie for second place for most kills in a single match.

Coday Slams Record
Sophomore outside hitter Alison Coday slammed 31 kills in the Tigers' match against Florida State. In the 21 years of Tiger volleyball, Coday's 31 kills in a single match rank second in Clemson match records.

Thieke Sets Herself to the Top

In the match against North Carolina, Thieke reached her 3,723 career assist which topped the previous record of 3,722 assists held by former standout setter Heather Kahl. Thieke currently has 3,802 career assists and is still climbing.

The 1997 Tigers have already made their mark in Clemson history by becoming only the fifth team in Tiger history to accumulate over 400 block assists. The Tigers currently have 460 block assists which ranks fifth in Tiger season bests.
