Clemson Volleyball Off to a Strong Start

The Clemson Tiger volleyball team managed a perfect 2-0 record on matches played September 19th and 20th. In their match on Friday, September 19th, the Tigers defeated the SMU Mustangs in three, 15-8, 15-4, and 15-3. Then, on Saturday, September 20th, Clemson defeated the Jacksonville Dolphins 15-7, 12-15, 15-5, and 15-4.

The Tigers will head into Tuesday's match against South Carolina with a perfect 10-0 record.

Tigers Off to a Strong Start
The Tigers' 10-0 start is the best since 1994 (14-0). This is just the third 10-0 start in Clemson's 21 years of volleyball. The Tigers' best start ever was in 1992 under head coach Ernie Arill, when Clemson went 15-0 before taking a loss to the Georgia Bulldogs.

The 1997 Tigers are also one of only three teams to have won three tournaments in a single season.

Clemson On the Home Front
The Tigers' next four matches will be played on their home court in Jervey Gym. On Tuesday, September 23rd the Tigers' will play their final non-conference match before heading into the ACC with a matchup against instate rival South Carolina. Following the South Carolina match, Clemson will play three straight ACC home matches against Wake Forest, Duke, and Georgia Tech.

Stern & Thieke Tackle Statistical Feat
Sophomore Cindy Stern and senior Michelle Thieke had a great weekend in Dallas, at the SMU Tournament accumulating a total of three triple doubles. In the Tigers' first match against Mississippi State, Stern's triple double included 12 kills, 10 digs, and 10 blocks while Thieke added 10 kills, 47 assists, and 12 digs. Then, in the Tigers' victory over Sam Houston State, Stern added another triple double when she tallied 23 kills, 11 digs, and 10 blocks.

Triple doubles have been a rare occurrence in the Tiger record book. Only four other players in the 21 years of Tiger volleyball are part of this elite group.

Tigers Chart New Records
After only their first ten matches of the 1997 season, the Tigers have already placed themselves into the record books. Clemson tagged a total of 30 block assists in its first match of the season against Auburn. These 30 block assists earned Clemson the fifth-place slot for most block assists in a single match.

The 1997 Tigers once again added their names to the records in their match against SMU. In the five game match, at SMU, Clemson accumulated a total of 92 kills, enough to place them in a tie for second place for most kills in a single match.

Hoover Improves Record
Head volleyball coach Jolene Jordan Hoover entered the 1997 season with a 95-41 overall record after her first four years at Clemson. Now, in her fifth year as the Tigers' head coach, Hoover has already improved her Clemson record to 105-41, an outstanding .719 winning percentage. Hoover is just the second coach in Clemson history to win over 100 matches. Linda White (138) is the career leader.

Individual Records Broken
Individually, two of the 1997 Tigers have placed themselves into the individual records. Senior setter Michelle Thieke had an outstanding .818 hitting percentage in Clemson's win against Sam Houston. This hitting percentage is the second best in Tiger volleyball history, behind Heidi Kahl's .910 hitting percentage in 1989 at Winthrop.

Another individual record belongs to sophomore middle hitter Cindy Stern. Against Mississippi State, Stern tallied ten block assists which ties her for second place with Brenda Mailander. The first slot is held by Julie Marx who accumulated 12 against Bradley in 1989.
