Tigers Win Invitational

The Clemson Tiger volleyball team opened up its 1997 season when they traveled to Alabama for the Auburn War Eagle Invitational. The Invitational was held August 29 & 30. On the 29th Clemson faced Auburn, a team that recieved votes in the AVCA pre-season poll; the Tigers defeated Auburn by scores 10-15, 5-15, 15-8, 15-8, and 18-16. On the 30th, Clemson was slated against Pittsburgh, another team that had recieved votes in the AVCA preseason poll. The Tigers defeated the Panthers 15-6, 8-15, 15-4, and 15-6. This was Clemson's final match of the Invitational,and their 2-0 performance captured the title of the War Eagle Invitational champions.

Clemson's Big Orange Bash The Tigers will host the seventh annual Big Orange Bash on September 5 & 6. Clemson will start the tournament with a match against William & Mary on September 5th at 7:00 pm. On Saturday the 6th, the Tigers will play two matches beginning with Drexel at 10:00 am, and then concluding the Tournament against Saint Louis at 6:00 pm.

Thieke and Schulz Grab Honors Senior Michelle Thieke and sophomore Stephanie Schulz were both selected as members of the 1997 War Eagle Invitational all-tournament team. Thieke, a 5-10 setter, is entering her third year as the Tigers starting setter. Throughout the Invitational, Thieke tallied 96 assists, and 28 digs. Stephanie Schulz, a 6-2 middle hitter, had an outstanding weekend accumulating 23 kills, three aces, 15 blocks, and a .429 hitting percentage.

Tigers Chart New Record After only their first match of the 1997 season, the Tigers had already placed themselves into the record book. Against Auburn, Clemson tagged 30 block assists. These 30 block assists earned the 1997 team the 5th place slot for most block assists in a single match.

Coday Accepts the Challenge Sophomore Alison Coday stepped to the challenge of filling the shoes of four time All-ACC outside hitter Julie Rodriguez. Coday, a 6-1 sophomore, tallied 34 kills, 14 digs, 8 blocks and a .272 hitting percentage in the first two matches of the season.

Hoover Improves Record Head volleyball coach Jolene Jordan Hoover entered the 1997 season with a 95-41 overall record after her first four years at Clemson. Now, in her 5th year as the Tigers head coach, Hoover has already improved her Clemson record to 97-41, and an outstanding .702 winning percentage after only the first two matches of the season.

Stern Stands Tall Cindy Stern, a sophomore middle hitter and 1996 ACC All-Freshman team member, started out the 1997 with a bang, or should we say block. Stern accumulated an amazing five block solos and 11 block assists in the 2 match weekend. She also contributed 22 kills, two aces, and a .381 hitting percentage for the Invitational.
