FLUSHING, NY - Former Clemson women's tennis star Julie Coin advanced to the second round of the US Open on Tuesday. Coin upset 40th-ranked Casey Deliacqua in the opening round to earn a date against world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic on Thursday, Aug. 28. Second-round matches will be broadcast on the USA Network.
Coin, a native of Amiens, France, edged the Australian player in a pair of tie-breaks (7-6(6), 7-6(4)) to record her first career Grand Slam singles victory. She reached the main draw of the tournament after posting three straight wins in the qualifying round. Coin defeated 2008 NCAA Singles Champion Amanda McDowell, currently a junior at Georgia Tech, in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. She then won a three-set match over Sesil Karatantcheva (6-3, 6-7(), 6-3) and claimed the victory over Elena Baltacha, 7-5, 2-6, 7-6(4) to advance. Coin is currently ranked #171 in singles.
She was a three-time All-American at Clemson and rose to as high as the #2 ITA Tennis singles ranking in 2005. Coin was named the 2004 ACC Player-of-the-Year after leading the Tigers to the ACC Championship.
