WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Clemson rookie Josipa Bek advanced to the semifinals of the Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional Championships to be held on Monday, Oct. 27. Both Tiger doubles teams and freshman Keri Wong fell in quarterfinal action on Sunday at the University Indoor Tennis Center on the campus of Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC.
Bek dropped a first-set tie-break, 7-5, but eked out the win in the second set, which went into a tie-break as well. The native of Osijek, Croatia then won the third set decisively, downing Vanderbilt's Catherine Newman by a 6-1 margin. She will take on Caitlin Whoriskey of Tennessee tomorrow at 9:00 am. Both semifinal and finals matches are scheduled for Monday.
Whoriskey ended Wong's run in the tournament on Sunday, defeating the Tiger player, 6-1, 6-0, in the round of eight.
In doubles action, neither Clemson team was able to pull out the victory in the quarterfinals. Bek and Federica van Adrichem fell to NC State's team of Berkeley Brock and Lenka Hojckova, 8-5, while Wong and Ina Hadziselimovic came up short against fifth-seeded Amanda Granson and Reke Zsilinszka of Duke (8-6).
