MONTGOMERY, Alab. - The Clemson women's tennis team had a successful weekend at the MCC Collegiate Clay Courts tournament held at the Montgomery Country Club. Ani Mijacika and rookie Keri Wong won their respective flight championships, while Wong teamed with Ina Hadziselimovic to capture a doubles title as well. Seven members of the team competed In the event.
Mijacika, the nation's #2-ranked player, allowed Eva Petschnig of Columbus State just two games in the second and third sets after falling in the first-set tie break (7-5). She then defeated Tuscaloosa's Tiffany Welcher in the second round before posting a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Delia Sescioreanu of Auburn-Montgomery in the finals. In the Grey Flight, Keri Wong advanced to the winners bracket with a walkover in the first round. She then won in straight sets over Troy's Stephanie Viera (6-0, 6-1) and Auburn-Montgomery's Whitney Byrd (6-2, 6-1).
In the Blue Flight, junior Estefania Balda defeated Lindsey Wiseman of Memphis by a 6-1, 6-1 margin to open the event and then faced Tuscaloosa's Bigos in the next round. Newcomer Josipa Bek won her first two matches in straight sets before forfeiting the championship match due to an injury. She did not drop a game against Cammie Gray of West Florida and lost just one to South Alabama's Katie Welch.
Hadziselimovic defeated the Trojans' Lenka Hela in the Crimson Flight, 6-2, 6-1, before taking on Kathryn Carroll of Birmingham Southern College. In the same bracket, Alexanda Luc won her opening round match against Sylvanie Spangenberg, 7-6, 6-3, and faced Alice Tunaru of Tuscaloosa in the next round. Federica van Adrichem went 2-1 in singles play in the tournament. She defeated Kristin Chamberlain of Memphis (6-3, 6-0) before falling to Tuscaloosa's Taylor Lindsey in the winner's bracket (6-4, 6-4). In the consolation final, the senior won a 6-0, 6-3 decision over Jessica Diamond of Samford.
Van Adrichem teamed with Mijacika in the doubles red flight, where the duo went 2-1. They won easily over a team from Samford, 8-0, but fell in the next round to Babicova and Spangenberg of South Alabama, 8-5. They then posted an 8-4 victory over Welch and Bigos in the consolation rounds.
Wong and Hadziselimovic won all three of their matches in the Gold bracket, dropping just five games in capturing the title. Luc and Bek partnered in the same flight, winning matches over Zelenskaya and Waites (8-0) and Krisan and Welch (8-6).
The Tigers will be back in action over the Sept. 26-28 weekend at the annual Furman Fall Classic.
