PENN STATE DEFEATS CLEMSON 1-0 IN WOMENS SOCCER

Carole Dutchka scored the games only goal in leading seventh-seeded Penn State to a 1-0 win over Clemson in the NCAA Womens Soccer Tournaments Round of 16 at State College, PA Saturday November 21.

Dutchka scored her 12th goal of the season at the 61:47 mark with assists by Kelly Convey and Megan McKeown.

With the victory, Penn State improves to 21-3-1 overall, while the Lady Tigers complete the season at 16-7.

Clemson dominated Penn State in shooting, holding an 11-4 edge at a scoreless intermission. The Lady Tigers forward Jenny Crawford launched a shot at the buzzer that went in the net, but was ruled no good. The ball did not cross the goal line until after the horn.

The Lady Tigers also hit the cross bar on two other occasions. Overall, Clemson out-shot Penn State 19-8. The Lady Tigers recorded six corner kicks to the Lions two.

Penns States freshman goalkeeper Emily Oleksiuk had eight saves, while Clemson freshman Katie Carson had four in 82 minutes of work. Clemsons back-up keeper Julie Podhrasky stopped one shot in her eight minutes of guarding the net.

The game was played in 30-degree temperatures and a gusty wind.

CLEMSON SETS SCHOOL RECORD WITH 16 WINS--Clemson finished the 1998 season with a 16-7 record overall. The 16 wins is the most by a Clemson team in the history of the program.

CLEMSON WOMENS SOCCER TEAM RECEIVES FIFTH STRAIGHT BID--For the fifth year in a row, the Clemson womens soccer team received a bid to the NCAA Womens Soccer Tournament. The 1998 season was the fifth year Clemson has fielded a women's soccer team.

LADY TIGER LEADERS-Sara Burkett had 16 goals and 10 assists for 42 points in 1998 to lead the team. Beth Keller had 14 goals and five assists for 33 points. Sheri Bueter led the team in assists with 12.

NATIONAL RANKINGS--Clemson is ranked 11th by Soccer America and 12th according to the NSCAA Poll in the final regular season polls. The NSCAA will release another poll after the NCAA Tournament.

CLEMSON WAS FINALIST IN ACC TOURNAMENT-Clemson defeated N.C. State 4-1 in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament on November 5, The Lady Tigers also defeated Virginia 2-1 in the semifinals on November 6. Clemson lost to North Carolina in the finals 4-0 on November 8.

LADY TIGERS NAMED ALL-ACC--Sara Burkett and Sheri Bueter both were named first team All-ACC, and teammate Beth Keller was named to the second-team as announced by the league office on November 4.

CLEMSON'S RECORD--Clemson had a 16-6 record overall in 1998. Clemson also finished the regular season with a 5-2 mark in the ACC. The five league wins is the most ACC victories for the Lady Tigers since the beginning of the program in 1994. The 16 wins is the most by a Clemson team in the history of the program.

LADY TIGERS CLIMBING CAREER CHARTS--Sara Burkett finished her career with 112 points and is first on the Clemson career list for most points scored. Sheri Bueter finished her career with 92 points and is third on the Clemson career list. Jennifer Crawford is currently fourth on the Clemson career list for most points scored with 89. Sheri Bueter finished her career in first place on the Clemson career list for most assists with 40. Burkett had 36 career assists and is second on the school's career list.

LEONE'S RECORD-Head Coach Tracey Leone has completed her fifth year at Clemson. She currently has a 75-32-2 record overall at the school. This is also Leone's career record as well.

CLEMSON'S WINNING STREAK--Clemson won eight matches between September 20 and October 12. This is a school record for the longest winning streak.

POLL STREAK--Clemson has been ranked in 52 consecutive polls since the 1994 season. The first time the Lady Tigers were ranked was 17th by the NSCAA poll on September 26, 1994. The 1994 season was the first year of the Lady Tiger program.

CLEMSON SETS SCHOOL RECORD--The five ACC wins this season is a school record for most ACC wins in a single season.

KELLER SCORED FIVE GOALS IN ACC TOURNAMENT--Beth Keller scored three goals in Clemson's 4-1 win over N.C. State in the quarterfinal round of the ACC Tournament on Thursday, November 5. She scored two goals in the semifinal contest against Virginia on November 6.

CLEMSON'S NCAA TOURNAMENT HISTORY--Clemson has been to five NCAA Tournaments since 1994, the first year Clemson fielded a women's soccer team. Clemson has a 3-4-1 record in the NCAA Tournament. The Lady Tigers advanced to the NCAA's Final Eight in 1997.

BURKETT STARTED 87 MATCHES IN HER CAREER-Sara Burkett started 87 matches during her career. This is the most matches started by a player in the school's history. Sheri Bueter started 82 matches during her career.

CRAWFORD NEARING CAREER GOAL-SCORING RECORD-Jennifer Crawford needs only seven more goals to become Clemson's all-time career goal scoring leader. She currently has 37 goals during her career. Carmie Landeens holds the record with 43 career goals.
