Clemson Defeats Georgia 1-0 In NCAA Soccer

CLEMSON, Sc--Jenny Crawford scored her seventeenth goal of the season leading Clemson to a 1-0 victory over Georgia in the First Round of the NCAA tournament at Clemson, SC Monday night.

This is Clemson's first victory in the NCAA Tournament as this is their fourth year of the program. Clemson is now 14-6 overall while Georgia drops to 15-6-1.

At the 17:33 point into the game, Georgia was awarded a penalty kick. The kick was taken by Kristy Bongiovanni, and it was saved by Clemson goalkeeper, Suzanne Putnam. The ball came off of Putnam and Bongiovanni attempted another shot that came off the cross bar. Allison Thornbury tried a third shot at the goal before it was cleared by a Clemson defender.

Crawford scored the game's only goal at the 79:59 mark. Sheri Bueter streaked down the left side and passed three Georgia defenders. She crossed the ball to the far post to Crawford who volleyed a shot from eight yards out to the right corner of the goal.

The Lady Tigers will play UNC-Greensboro in the next round

"Suzanne Putnam rose to the challenge and made a great save on the penalty kick. That was a big turning point in the game."

"We felt like there was this boulder and now it's starting to role for us."

"During halftime we talked about the first half and what we could do to score and win the game."

"This was a hard fought battle because both teams wanted to win their first NCAA tourney game. We both wanted it do really badly."
