KNOXVILLE, TN - The Clemson women's soccer team fell to Tennessee in double overtime in the second round of the 2007 NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament on Sunday. The third-seeded and 15th-ranked Lady Vols scored the game's lone goal in the 104th minute at Regal Soccer Stadium in Knoxville, TN to take a 1-0 win.
The Lady Tigers advanced to overtime for the eighth time this season and finished with a 1-2-5 record in those contests. Clemson finishes the 2007 campaign with a 10-6-5 overall record.
Clemson took 12 shots in the contest to Tennessee's 20 and the Lady Tigers had two corner kicks to the Lady Vols' 12. Senior Ashley Phillips recorded eight saves in goal for Clemson and Tennessee's Jaimel Johnson posted five.
The two teams played scoreless soccer through 103 minutes of play until the 103:27 mark in double overtime when the Lady Vols' Kylee Rossi netted the game winner. Rossi received the ball from Mick Imgram, settled it and shot it into the upper left corner of the goal past the outstretched arms of the diving Phillips.
"I definitely want to congratulate Tennessee," said Head Coach Todd Bramble. "They were quite good today and probably deserved to win. Having said that, I did not think we were going to lose this game. We gave a very gutsy performance and showed a tremendous amount of character and grit. We were so good defensively and have such a good keeper, I just did not think we would concede a goal and thought the game would go to penalty kicks."
"I don't want to leave without commenting on the five seniors who played their last game for us today. They have been wonderful representatives of our program and the University and they are going to be missed dearly."
