CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Compliments RichmondSpiders.com) - The University of Richmond stunned Clemson, 1-0 in the first round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament on Friday afternoon at Charlotte's Transamerica Field.

"It was a great college soccer game," Richmond coach Peter Albright said. "Clemson had the better of the chances in the first half. However, I thought we had the better of the play in the second half. We had a good game plan and we stuck with our game plan. I am very proud of our team."

Clemson dominated play in the first half with an 11-2 shot advantage but they were not able to capitalize on any of those shots.

In the second stanza, Annette Isham broke through the midfield and put a perfect pass on the foot of Jessica Marino, who hit the ball from 15 yards out to far left corner in the 58th minute.

Clemson had a serious scoring chance in the closing minutes (2:08) when forward Deliah Arrington sent a shot toward the lower right corner of the goal but Richmond goalkeeper Megan Cox made a diving save, deflecting the ball out-of-bounds preserve the shutout.

With the win Richmond improved to 14-5-2 on the season and advanced to Sunday's second round game against James Madison, which beat Charlotte, 1-0.
