DURHAM, NC - The Clemson women's soccer team fell to #11 Duke on Sunday by a score of 6-0 at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, NC. The Tigers fall to 5-9-1 overall and 1-6-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while the Blue Devils improve to 12-3-2 (4-2-2 ACC).
Duke scored in the first and 21st minute of play and an own goal by the Tigers gave the Blue Devils a 3-0 lead heading into halftime. The Blue Devils scored three more times in the second half. KayAnne Gummersall netted two goals for Duke in the victory.
The Tigers took three shots in the contest to the Blue Devils' 15. Both teams had five corner kick opportunities. Sophomore Paula Pritzen recorded three saves in goal for the Tigers.
"We knew this was going to be an emotional game for both teams and it was," said head coach Hershey Strosberg. "Duke had a lot to play for and we just were not able to match them. We ended up chasing the game as we have quite a few times this season.
"We are a young team that is learning some painful lessons. Down the road, these lessons will translate into experience for us. We have two games left to challenge ourselves and try to put ourselves on the other end of one of these results."
The Tigers will travel to Maryland and Boston College next week to conclude the regular season. Clemson will face the Terrapins on Thursday, October 30 at 7:00 p.m. in College Park, MD, before heading to Chestnut Hill, MA to take on the 13th-ranked Eagles on Sunday, November 2 at 1:00 p.m.
