CLEMSON, SC - The Tiger women's soccer team fell to Miami by a score of 1-0 in a double-overtime heartbreaker on Thursday night, which was Senior Night, at Riggs Field. With the loss, Clemson falls to 5-7-1 overall and 1-4-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, while the Hurricanes improve to 8-6-2 (1-4-1 ACC).
The two teams played an even game of scoreless soccer for 105 minutes before the Hurricanes were able to put the game's lone goal on the board. Miami's Lauren Singer received the ball out wide and sent it into the middle to Julianne Rickers. Rickers was able to send a 15-yard shot into the left side of the net past diving Tiger keeper Paula Pritzen.
For the game, Clemson took 19 shots to Miami's 22 and each team had six corner kick opportunities. Pritzen recorded 13 saves in goal for the Tigers and Vikki Alonzo tallied three for the Hurricanes.
"I'm proud of this team for fighting for 105 minutes and leaving everything on the field," said head coach Hershey Strosberg after the game. "We had some great looks in overtime which could have easily put the game away in our favor. Soccer can be a game of luck and tonight, Miami was the luckier team.
"As a team we are disappointed because we wanted to honor our seniors with a win in their last game at Riggs Field. Julie Bolt and Molly Johnson have given their all to this team for four solid years and have been tremendous leaders, both on and off the field. I'm very proud of them and proud of the entire team for backing them up tonight, win or lose."
Clemson will conclude the regular season with four Atlantic Coast Conference games on the road. The Tigers will travel to Tallahassee, FL on Thursday, October 23 to face eighth-ranked Florida State. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Seminole Soccer Complex.
