WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Tiger women's soccer team fell to 15th-ranked Wake Forest on Sunday afternoon in Winston-Salem, NC by a score of 2-0. With the loss, Clemson falls to 5-6-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while the Demon Deacons improve to 9-4 overall and 2-3 in league play.
Wake Forest's two goals were scored in the fourth and 82nd minutes of the game by Jill Hutchinson and Amy Smerdzinski, respectively. The Tigers took three shots in the contest, while the Demon Deacons took 18, and Clemson had one corner kick to Wake Forest's two. Sophomore keeper Paula Pritzen recorded seven saves in goal for Clemson while Laura Morse tallied one for the Demon Deacons.
"Wake Forest showed a lot of emotion on their Senior Day and they took advantage of that emotion by scoring an early goal," said head coach Hershey Strosberg. "They are a very experienced team and were certainly the better team today. We lost our composure a bit after they scored and just did not have the answers for them.
"We made a change late in the second half in an attempt to score the equalizer which was a gamble that caused us to give up the second goal and put the game out of reach. Now we have to look to rebound once again on Thursday night against Miami, a team that is fighting for their conference life just as we are."
The Tigers will play host to Miami on Thursday, October 16 at 7:00 p.m. It will be Clemson's final home game, as the team will finish the regular season with four Atlantic Coast Conference games on the road. Thursday's game will be Senior Day for four-year starters Julie Bolt and Molly Johnson.
