CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA--Kelly Quinn scored the game winner in the first overtime period in leading fifth-ranked Virginia to a 2-1 win over Clemson in a women's Atlantic Coast Conference soccer match at Charlottesville, VA Sunday afternoon.
With the win, Virginia improves to 10-3-1 overall and 5-1 in the ACC. Clemson falls to 6-5-2 overall, and 1-3-1 in league play. The Cavaliers are ranked fifth in the latest polls.
Virginia took a 1-0 lead in the 73rd minute. Jess Rostedt scored her seventh goal of the season as she sent a 10-yard shot into the net.
Clemson tied the score 3:38 later as Julie Bolt scored her first goal of the season with an assist by Courtney Foster. Bolt sent a far post shot into the goal that looped over the Virginia goalkeeper Christina de Vries from the flank.
With 4:57 gone in the first overtime period, Quinn scored from a cross from Sarah Huffman for her fourth goal of the year. Huffman dribbled to the end line and sent a ball to the front of the goal mouth that Quinn tapped in for the game-winner.
"It was a hard-fought contest," said Clemson Head Coach Todd Bramble. "We did a great job executing the game plan. I am proud of our effort today. I am looking forward to getting back to Riggs Field on Wednesday and playing Miami. We hope we have a great crowd for our match with the Hurricanes."
Clemson will play host to Miami on Wednesday, October 12, at 7:00 p.m. on Riggs Field in the Lady Tigers' next action.
