CHAPEL HILL, NC - The 14th-ranked Clemson women's soccer team fell to #12 North Carolina on the road on Friday evening by a score of 3-0 at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, NC. With the loss, the Lady Tigers fall to 8-2-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Tar Heels improve to 8-3-0 (2-1-0 ACC) on the season with the win.
The Tar Heels controlled the ball for the majority of the game, taking 21 shots and 14 corner kicks, while the Lady Tigers did not take a shot or corner kick in the match. Senior goalkeeper Ashley Phillips collected eight saves against the aggressive Tar Heel attack.
The Tar Heels got on the board in the 42nd minute as Yael Averbuch put a 35-yard shot between the cross bar and the top of Phillips' outstretched hands. Tobin Heath and Ariel Harris assisted Averbuch on the goal.
Erin Mikula scored North Carolina's second goal at the 78:41 mark and was assisted by Casey Nogueira and Nikki Washington. The Tar Heels put in a third goal with 14 seconds left in the game when Ally Long's shot hit the cross bar and went in the net.
"All the credit goes to North Carolina in this one," noted Head Coach Todd Bramble. "They took us out of our game entirely."
"We used halftime to regroup and I felt like we came out and showed some signs of life early in the second half, but what North Carolina did in this game created a lot of problems for us. The players are certainly disappointed, but we will put this behind us now and move on."
The Lady Tigers will travel to the state of Virginia next weekend for two conference road matches. Clemson will face Virginia Tech on Thursday, October 11 at 7:00 p.m. in Blacksburg before heading to Charlottesville on Sunday, October 14 for a 2:00 p.m. contest against Virginia. The Cavaliers are currently ranked in the top five in the nation in all three polls and as high as third according to Soccer Buzz.
