CLEMSON, SC - The 14th-ranked Clemson women's soccer team played eighth-ranked Boston College to a 0-0 tie on Sunday afternoon at Riggs Field. The tie brings the Lady Tigers' record to 8-1-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while the Eagles are now 7-0-2 on the season (0-0-1 ACC).
Neither team was able to score through 90 minutes of regulation play and two 10-minute overtime periods. The match was nearly even statistically between the two teams. Clemson took 11 shots, while Boston College took 10, and the Lady Tigers had four corner kicks to the Eagles' seven.
Senior All-American Ashley Phillips continued her impressive play in goal for the Lady Tigers, recording three saves against the Eagles. For the season, Phillips has allowed just one goal in over 730 minutes of play for a 0.12 goals-against average, which ranks her in the top-five nationally.
The Lady Tigers had one good scoring opportunity at the end of regulation. With less than two minutes to go in the second half, freshman Samantha Fortier drew the Eagle defender away from the goal and sent a quick pass to sophomore Molly Franklin. Franklin's rolling shot was less than a foot wide to the left of the goal.
"This was exactly what I expected from this match," noted Head Coach Todd Bramble. "Entering the game, I felt that both teams were identical in a lot of ways, and the game certainly went that way."
"Boston College is leaving here happy with the tie, while we are going away disappointed that we were unable to win. Given that we were the lower-ranked team coming in to the game, I'm pleased with that result."
After four straight home games, Clemson will now go on the road for four matches, beginning with a Friday, October 5 contest against sixth-ranked North Carolina. The Lady Tigers and the Tar Heels will begin play at 7:00 p.m. at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, NC.
