CLEMSON, SC--Ali Hawkins and Yael Averbuch both scored goals in the middle of the first half in leading second-ranked North Carolina to a 2-0 win over Clemson in an Atlantic Coast Conference women's soccer match at Clemson's Historic Riggs Field Thursday night.
With the win, North Carolina improves to 11-1 overall and 3-0 in the ACC. Clemson falls to 5-5 overall and 1-2 in league play. North Carolina is ranked second nationally in the polls released this week.
North Carolina scored in the 19th minute as Ali Hawkins scored her second goal of the season with an assist from Heather O'Reilly off a corner kick.
In the 28th minute Yael Averbuch scored her sixth goal of the season with an assist by Elizabeth Guess. Guess crossed the ball from the left and Averbuch headed the ball in the middle of the goal from eight yards out.
"Our performance tonight was acceptable," said Clemson Head Coach Todd Bramble. "I am disappointed we gave up two early goals. We executed the game plan well. Against a team like North Carolina you are not going to get a lot of opportunities and the few we got, we couldn't capitalize. We defended well and I think our backs played the best they have all season."
"I am happy to steal an ACC win on the road," said North Carolina Head Coach Anson Dorrance. This is one of the finest stadiums and one of the best atmospheres in America. Julie Bolt played outstanding for Clemson and she gave us problems tonight. It was a good team effort for us tonight and we had a solid effort."
Clemson will play host to Francis Marion Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in the Lady Tigers' next action.
