CLEMSON, SC - The 14th-ranked Clemson women's soccer team defeated Maryland 1-0 in double overtime on Thursday night at Riggs Field. Junior Molly Johnson scored the lone goal for the Lady Tigers, who improve to 8-1 (1-0 ACC) with the victory, while Maryland falls to 4-2-2 (0-1 ACC).
The game was scoreless for over 105 minutes, as neither team was able to capitalize during regulation or the first of two 10-minute overtime periods. The Lady Tigers had a scoring opportunity in the final seconds of regulation, but Molly Franklin's shot was blocked to send the game into overtime.
In the second overtime period, Clemson drew a foul on the right side of the field. After a short delay due to a player injury, senior Elizabeth Jobe served the ball high in front of the net. Johnson was able to get above the pack in front of the net and head the ball into the corner for the game-winner at the 105:22 mark. The goal was Johnson's second on the season, while Jobe picked up her first assist.
"Maryland played us very well in the box the entire game until that point. EJ [Jobe] served the ball perfectly and put it right on the mark," said Johnson of the play leading up to the goal.
"We were not as sharp as we should have been," said Head Coach Todd Bramble. "We did not have a great week in practice. There was not enough urgency or focus in training and we played that way tonight."
"I am proud that we gutted it out and showed character in the end," he added. "It's a sign of a good team when you can win even when you aren't playing your best."
The Lady Tigers will play host to Boston College on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at Riggs Field. The Eagles are ranked in the top-10 in the nation in all three polls. The match is designated as a Solid Orange event and admission is free to all fans.
