Clemson Defeats Furman 2-1 Lady Tigers improve to 4-1-1
CLEMSON, SC-Britten Meyer and Candice Hein both scored one goal each in Clemson's 2-1 win over Furman in the Carolina's Cup Women's Soccer Tournament at Clemson, SC Sunday afternoon.
With the win, Clemson improves to 4-1-1 overall, while Furman falls to 2-4 this season.
Charlotte wins the tournament, while Clemson finishes second. Furman is third and South Carolina finishes fourth. Although Clemson and Charlotte won both of their respective matches in the tournament, Charlotte wins the tournament by scoring more goals (4) in their two matches than Clemson (3). Furman scored more goals (2) than South Carolina (1).
Clemson had a 2-0 lead in the first half. Meyer scored at the 6:34 mark from a pass by Allison Graham. Graham sent the ball in the box. Meyer headed the ball in from close range near the left post for her second goal of the season.
Hein scored at the 34:56 point into the match with assists by Jenny Smith and Fraser Gerth to give the Lady Tigers a 2-0 advantage. It was Hein's second goal of the season.
Furman scored early in the second half. Emily Krankowski scored off a cross by Andrea Morrison at the 59:56 mark.
"The result was the silver lining for us today," said Clemson Head Coach Todd Bramble. "We were more lucky than good. We seemed lifeless today. We were not as mentally prepared to play like Furman was today. Ashley Phillips had a great weekend. She is improving with every game. I also thought Kelly Schneider and Molly Johnson also played well and the people off the bench such as Candice Hein, Amber Funk, Jenny Smith, Fraser Gerth, and Kim Faerber did well in giving us a needed spark."
