Hershey Strosberg is in his second season as Head Women's Soccer Coach at Clemson University. Since arriving in Clemson in January of 2008, Strosberg has worked diligently to integrate his philosophy within the program. Entering the 2009 season, he has an experienced core group of returners, including nine starters that are eager to put this new version of the team onto the field. In addition, a class of 10 talented newcomers will arrive ready to step up to the challenge. Strosberg expects the increased level of intrasquad competition to translate to increased success across the board. One thing that has not changed under Strosberg is the program's tradition of academic excellence. The Tigers had another stellar year in the classroom, recording a cumulative team grade point average of 3.30 for the fall semester of 2008 and 3.47 for the spring of 2009. The 3.47 figure is the fifth-best cumulative team GPA for any Clemson program on record. Eighteen of Strosberg's 25 players recorded a 3.0 GPA or better in the fall, while 19 did so in the spring. Prior to coming to Clemson, Strosberg was an assistant women's coach at the University of Virginia for seven seasons, from 2001-07. During his tenure at Virginia, Strosberg served as the Cavaliers' recruiting coordinator, bringing in five top-10 recruiting classes during his seven seasons. During this time, the Cavalier team won the program's first ACC title, finished in the national top 10 five times and advanced to the NCAA Tournament all seven seasons, including a trip to the NCAA Sweet 16 and an eighth-place final national ranking in 2007. While at Virginia, Strosberg worked closely with team and individual training and had served as the goalkeeper/defensive coach for his first two seasons. He performed daily administrative operations and managed team travel and the team's operating budget. He was also the co-director of Soccer Centers of Excellence camps and other coaching clinics throughout the year. Prior to working as an assistant at Virginia, Strosberg was a women's assistant coach at his alma mater, Cortland College, in Cortland, NY from August 1998 to December 1999. Cortland finished in the top 24 nationally in NCAA Division III both seasons. At Cortland, Strosberg worked with the goalkeepers and field players and assisted with daily administrative tasks and recruiting operations. Strosberg has been a staff coach in the U.S. Youth Soccer Association's Region I program since 1996, and served as the head coach for the U-14 and U-17 age groups in 2005 and 2006. He first worked as an assistant coach with the U-13 and U-14 regional teams, where he developed curriculums and led the evaluation and selection of the various Region I teams and their respective training camps. He also has international coaching experience. He worked under John Daley while helping lead a U.S. U-15 team past the youth national teams of Ireland, Scotland and Holland before beating England in the finals. The next year, Strosberg led a U-14 team on an international tour of Spain. Several of those players recently represented the U.S. U-17 National team that finished second in the first-ever U-17 World Cup this past year. During the spring of 2008, the U.S. Under 20 World Cup team, coached by former national team coach and Olympic and World Cup Champion Tony DiCicco, held a two-week training camp at Clemson. Strosberg had worked with many of the players on that roster through the Olympic Development Program. The team went on to claim the U-20 World Cup title, winning six matches, including the final over Korea DPR in La Florida, Chile. Strosberg has also served as an observer for the U.S. Men's and Women's National Teams on several occasions. This past spring Strosberg was invited to preseason by Coach DiCicco to help out with the Boston Breakers. Strosberg played professionally for the USISL's New York Capital District Alleycats in Albany, NY from 1993-1996. He represented the United States at the U.S. Maccabiah Games in Israel in 1997 and was an alternate on the team in 1993. Strosberg was named a Regional All-American at Cortland College, where he played in 1995 and 1996. Strosberg earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from Cortland College in 1997. He completed his Masters degree in Physical Education with a concentration in sports psychology and coaching in 1999. He holds a U.S. Soccer "A" License and a U.S. Soccer National "Y" License, as well as an NSCAA Premier Diploma. Strosberg and his wife, Jessica (Wilk), were married in December of 2007. |
