Clemson Upsets Fifth-Ranked North Carolina

CLEMSON, S.C. -- Kerri Thomas scored 12 points and had a career-high 11 rebounds, while teammate Amy Geren added 24 points in leading Clemson to a 77-63 upset win over North Carolina in an Atlantic Coast Conference women's basketball game at Clemson, SC Friday night.

Thomas was 5-10 from the field and had six offensive rebounds in only 19 minutes of play. Amy Geren was 9-18 from the floor and 6-9 from the three-point line.

Clemson built its largest lead of the game of 25 points (60-35) with 7:59 left to go in the game as Jeanette Davis hit a shot from underneath. Clemson had a 34-21 at the half and rallied in the second half, outscoring the Tar Heels 26-14 in the first 12 minutes of the second half. Kerri Thomas scored the first 10 points for Clemson in the second half in the first three minutes.

With the win Clemson improves its record to 11-2 overall, 3-0 in the ACC. North Carolina falls to 10-2 overall and 1-1 in the league play. The Tar Heels are ranked fifth in the Associated Press and the USA Today polls. Clemson is unranked.

The Lady Tigers have won eight games in a row, 10 of their last 11.

Clemson Head Coach Jim Davis has defeated 34 top 25 teams since his arrival at Clemson in the 1987-88 season. At Littlejohn Coliseum, he has a 22-16 record vs. Associated Press Top 25 teams including a 2-1 record vs. teams ranked fifth. Overall, he is now 3-5 vs. teams ranked fifth in the Associated Press poll.

On Monday, January 5, the Lady Tigers will entertain ninth-ranked Virginia at 7:00 p.m.
