Women's Basketball Narrowly Escapes Wake Forest, 61-60

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-Amy Geren scored 15 points, including the game-winning basket with 24.8 seconds remaining, as No. 23 Clemson escaped with a 61-60 win over host Wake Forest in ACC women's basketball action at Joel Coliseum on Thursday night.

Wake Forest (4-13, 0-7) trailed the Tigers by one at halftime, 31-30, but took the lead on an Emon McMillian layup just 3:14 into the second period. The Demon Deacons led by as many as seven points late in the game, but Clemson went on a 12-2 run, keyed by a four-point play by Geren, to go up by three with 2:08 remaining. Wake regained the lead on a pair of Olivia Dardy free throws with 39 seconds left, but Geren's baseline jumper put the Tigers up 61-60. Wake's Alisha Mosley put up a shot with five seconds to go, but the shot was off and time expired as both teams scrambled for the rebound.

Clemson shot just 36.5 percent from the floor and held a slight edge in rebounding, 33-31. Wake Forest shot 45.5 percent from the field but committed 20 turnovers. Clemson's Itoro Umoh added 13 points, while Natasha Anderson chipped in 12. Kerri Thomas led the Tigers on the boards with 10 rebounds. For the Deacons, Cynthia Kelly scored 16 points, while McMillian and Dardy added 13 apiece. Dardy recorded a double-double, also grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds.

Wake travels to Virginia for a 7:30 game on Sunday, January 18, while Clemson hosts Georgia Tech next Thursday at 7:00 pm.
