CLEMSON, SC - The Lady Tigers basketball team overcame a 42-point performance by San Diego's Michelle Augustavo to claim its third victory of the 2005-06 season. Clemson defeated the Toreros, 72-68, on Sunday at Littlejohn Coliseum, but Augustavo was the story of the afternoon.
The sophomore guard made 15 field goals, which ties her for fourth most by a Clemson opponent in the statistical category, including 10-19 shooting from three-point range to total 42 points for the now 3-6 Toreros. Augustavo accounted for 61.8% of her team's points, the highest percentage by one player of a team's total points allowed by a Clemson team in history.
The Lady Tigers had four players post double-figure point totals and were led in the scoring column by senior Julie Talley with 17. She continued her long-range touch, drowning four of eight three-pointers to average just over 50% from behind the arc this year. Tasha Phillips added 14 points in the winning effort, while Maxienne White and Amanda Frist each had 13. White also collected 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the year.
Clemson trailed for much of the first half, as Augustavo scored her team's first 23 points, and took its first lead at 19-18 at the 8:28 mark. The score went back-and-forth for the remainder of the period with the Lady Tigers holding a one-point, 36-35, advantage at the break.
The home team scored first to start the second half and led 40-35 before San Diego knotted the score at 42 apiece. The Toreros then took a 45-44 lead at 12:42. A three by Talley put Clemson up 54-51 and the Lady Tigers maintained their advantage the rest of the way. Clemson led by as many as nine at 65-56, but San Diego kept fighting and brought the score to within one point with just over two minutes left to play.

Clemson returns to action next Sunday, Dec. 18 to face Wagner Seahawks at 3:00 PM at Littlejohn Coliseum. The Lady Tigers will play three games in a six-day stretch before the Christmas holiday.
