GREENVILLE, SC - The Clemson women's basketball team blocked a record 16 shots in its 82-55 victory over the Furman Paladins on Wednesday night at the Timmons Arena in Greenville, SC. Khaili Sanders had a career-high eight blocks in the game, and Tasha Phillips led the Lady Tigers in scoring for the second straight game with 17 points. With the win, Clemson improved to 2-5 on the year, while Furman fell to 2-2.
Phillips was 7-10 from the field and 3-5 from the three-point line, while collecting six rebounds, six assists and three blocked shots. Lady Tiger Julie Talley hit four three-point shots to total 12 points against the Paladins. Sanders and Tasha Taylor also scored in double-figures for Clemson, posting 10 and 11, respectively. Sanders led the Lady Tigers on the boards as well with nine rebounds and Taylor added seven.
Clemson shot 50% from the field in the game (34-68) and held the Paladins to 30% shooting (18-60).
Chrissy Phelps was Furman's only double-figure scorer in the contest as she recorded 10 on Wednesday night. Megan Scott and Melynda Gant tied for game-high honors with six rebounds apiece.
Talley's three-point barrage continued as she hit scored the first six points of the game on two three-pointers for the Lady Tigers. Clemson jumped out to an early lead in the period, holding a 24-19 advantage at the 9:45 mark. Furman's five-minute scoring draught was ended by Maggie McKennie's basket at 7:14. The Lady Tigers then held the Paladins to just three field goals the rest of the half. Clemson outscored Furman, 14-10, to end the period with a 38-22 lead, the fewest points Clemson has allowed in a half this season. Phillips led the Lady Tiger squad with eight points and four rebounds at the break.
Clemson went on a 9-0 run to start the second half as Furman failed to score a field goal until the 16:39 mark. The Lady Tigers then went up by 30 points at 63-33 on a basket by Maxienne White, her first points of the night. Clemson held a 30-point advantage for a second time in the contest on a field goal by Amanda Frist as the shot clock neared zero that put the Lady Tigers up, 77-47. Clemson went on to win the game by a score of 82-55 for the team's second win of the season.
