Greensboro, NC - Travis Padgett broke the Clemson school record and posted the second-fastest time in the country in the 100m to lead the Tiger men's track & field team on day one at the NCAA East Region Championships on Friday at North Carolina A&T's Irwin Belk Track Facility. A freshman from Shelby, NC, Padgett ran a 10.06 to cruise to Saturday's final. His time dramatically improved on his personal best, wihch was a 10.28 two weekends ago at Georgia Tech. His time was the fastest non-wind aided 100m dash in school history. Padgett will compete Saturday in two events, as he helped the 4x100m relay team qualify for the finals in that event as well.
The 4x100m relay team of Roy Cheney, Corey Brown, Padgett, and Cowin Mills posted a time of 40.19 and will compete Saturday for the East Region Championship at 5:10 PM. Brown also competed in the prelims of the 200m on Friday evening, finishing 11th overall with a time of 21.20.
Lydell Perry finished 13th overall to lead three Tigers in the 110m high hurdles. He posted a season-best time of 14.07, while teammate Roy Cheney also had a season-best at 14.10. Cheney finished 16th, while multi-event athlete Brent Hobbs came home with a time of 14.33 seconds. Andy Porter did not compete in the 400m hurdle preliminaries due to an injury.
George Fields just missed All-Region honors with a sixth-place finish in the long jump. The freshman from Columbia, SC had a leap of 24'9.25", his second-best mark of the 2006 season.
Andrew Kessler and Mitch Greeley both scored for the Tiger team in the pole vault. Both student-athletes cleared 17'1", with Kessler finishing in sixth and Greeley eighth. It was a personal best for Kessler, a senior.

The Tiger team returns to action on Saturday, beginning with Jason Bell in the triple jump at 12:00 PM. Adam Linkenauger will compete in the high jump, while Itay Magidi will run the 3000m steeplechase.
