Clemson Men's Track And Field Concludes Day One Of Orange & Purple Classic

CLEMSON, SC - The Clemson men's track and field team completed competition on day one of the 2003 Orange & Purple Classic with 10 regional qualifiers. Overall, 64 male student-athletes posted regional qualifying marks at the meet, and two stadium records were set. NC State's Jesse Williams set a record in the high jump, clearing 7'4.25" to break the former record of 7'3.75" set by Cameron Wright in 1996. In the pole vault, South Carolina's Chris Steddum cleared 17'0.75" to break the 13-year-old record of 17'0" set by Clemson's Jeff Fields. The Orange & Purple Classic will resume Sunday morning, as the decathlon competition continues beginning at 10:30 AM at the Rock Norman Track Complex. In the track events, Airese Currie and Larry Griffin finished third and fourth in the 100m dash. Currie broke the tape in 10.40, and Griffin clocked a 10.44, both regional qualifying times. In the 200m, Currie placed second with another regional qualifying time of 20.90, while Tye Hill was fifth in 21.30. Otto Spain was the runner-up in the 400m, recording a time of 45.57 to regionally qualify. In the 1500m run, Itay Magidi placed second with his time of 3:55.46. Ryan Fenton and David Smith took first and second in the 3000m steeplechase, posting times of 9:24.04 and 9:56.57, respectively. Roy Cheney recorded a regional qualifying time of 14.15 in the 110m hurdles, then took second in the 400m hurdles with another regional qualifying time of 52.36. Scott Kautz placed fourth in the 400m hurdles, clocking a 53.13.
In the long jump, George Kitchens tied for second with a leap of 25'3.5", and Kai Maull was fourth with a mark of 24'7.75", With their marks today, both Kitchens and Maull qualified for the region meet in the long jump. Adam Klotzbach cleared 16'0.75" to tie for fourth and qualify for the regional championships in the pole vault. In the shot put, Derek Gilson recorded a throw of 54'1.25" to place fourth and qualify for the region meet.
fter the first day of the decathlon, Rick Hill leads the competition with 3,748 points. Hill has already provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships with 7,068 points scored at the ACC Championships. Brent Hobbs currently stands in third in the decathlon with 3,436 points. |
