TALLAHASSEE, FL - The Clemson men's track and field team stands in third place with 19 points after the first day of competition at the 2005 ACC Track and Field Championships. The Tigers' Danny Alge, Brandon Holmes and Matt Clark posted fourth-place finishes to lead Clemson on day one.
Danny Alge and Derek Gilson opened the Tigers' 2005 ACC Championships with the hammer throw. A sophomore from Summerville, SC, Alge recorded a personal-best and regional-qualifying mark of 189'6"/57.75m in his fourth-place finish. Gilson, a junior from Red Bank, NJ, placed eighth with his mark of 165'11"/50.57m. Junior Brandon Holmes (Woodruff, SC) brought home another fourth-place finish in the javelin throw with his career-best mark of 187'11"/57.29m. Brent Hobbs and Kyle Shaw also scored for the Tigers in the javelin throw, finishing seventh and eighth. Hobbs recorded a mark of 178'4"/54.37m and Shaw posted a mark of 172'5"/52.56m.
In the final event of the night for the Tigers, Matt Clark finished fourth in the 10,000m run with a career-best time of 30:12.24. Greg Isaacs crossed the finish line in 30:56.77 to finish ninth in the 25-lap event.
Ryan Koontz ranks third in the decathlon after the first day of competition. The sophomore from Statesboro, GA, recorded a time of 11.56 in the 100m dash, then posted a mark of 21'11.75" in the long jump. Koontz threw 38'6.25" in the shot put, and cleared a field-best of 6'6" in the high jump. In the final event of the day, he crossed the finish line in 50.62 to tally 3,645 points entering the last five events. Fellow decathletes Brent Hobbs and Kyle Shaw were forced to withdraw from competition due to injury.
