Clemson Men's Track And Field Finishes Second At 2003 ACC Championships
April 19, 2003 RALEIGH, NC - The Clemson men's track and field team finished second at the 2003 ACC Outdoor Championships held this weekend at NC State's Paul Derr Track. Florida State won the meet with 202 points, while the Tigers scored 166 points to finish as the runner-up. North Carolina finished third with 98 points, NC State and Georgia Tech tied for fourth with 94 points, Virginia scored 73.5 points to place sixth. Wake Forest's 45.5 points was good for seventh place, Duke finished eighth with 41 points, and Maryland scored two points.
The Tigers won four events on Saturday, while 14 Clemson athletes earned all-conference honors. Clemson's 4x100m relay team of Larry Griffin, Otto Spain, Airese Currie and Tye Hill claimed the event with a regional qualifying time of 40.20. This is the fourth consecutive 400m relay title for the Tigers. Freshman Roy Cheney won the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.15. Otto Spain claimed the 400m dash with his time of 46.30, a regional qualifying mark. Junior Rick Hill won the decathlon with 7,068 points. Kai Maull earned All-ACC accolades with a mark of 49'8.5" to place third in the triple jump. In the 100m, Airese Currie was the runner-up with a time of 10.52, and Larry Griffin was also all-conference with his third-place time of 10.59. Otto Spain also earned All-ACC honors with his third-place finish in the 200m, clocking a 21.37. Michael Bolling and Roy Cheney were second and third in the 400m hurdles, recording regional qualifying times of 51.93 and 52.30, respectively. In the 5000m, Jason Meany clocked a regional-qualifying time of 14:17.81 to finish as the runner-up.
In other final action on Saturday, Rashad Gardner scored for the Tigers in the 110m hurdles, running a time of 15.13. Terrance McDaniel scored in the triple jump with a seventh-place finish and mark of 48'1.25". In the 100m, Tye Hill placed fifth and Michael Bolling was sixth with times of 10.76 and 10.79 to score for the Tigers. Airese Currie was a scorer in the 200m, posting a time of 21.69 to place seventh. All four decathletes scored for Clemson, led by Hill's championship. Brent Hobbs placed fourth in the event with 6,311 points, Chris Gross took fifth with 6,309 points, and Ryan Hunter finished eighth with 6,158 points. Marcus Hodge and Rashad Gardner placed fifth and eighth in the 400m hurdles with times of 53.02 and 54.13 to score for Clemson. Derek Gilson threw 154'10" in the discus to place seventh and add points to the Clemson team score. In the final event of the day, the Tigers' 4x400m relay team of Ronald Richards, Roy Cheney, Warren Eure and Otto Spain finished second with a time of 3:12.32.
