CHAPEL HILL, NC - The Clemson men's track and field team is in third place after day one of the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The Tigers scored 39 points on the first day of competition and qualified 18 student-athletes for Saturday's finals. Day one highlights included George Kitchens' title in the long jump, Ryan Fenton's third-place finish in the 3000m steeplechase and Clayton Curtis' third-place finish in the javelin throw. All three Tigers earned All-ACC honors for their achievements.

Clemson advanced five Tigers to the finals of the 100m dash. Larry Griffin qualified for the East Region Championships with a season-best time of 10.48 and Tye Hill recorded a time of 10.51. George Kitchens ran a 10.59 to advance and Ronald Richards clocked a 10.61. Airese Currie was the final Tiger qualifier, posting a time of 10.78. Robert Ibeh also competed in the 100m preliminaries, recording a time of 11.04. Ronald Richards and Tye Hill also qualified for Saturday's finals, recording season-best times of 21.27 and 21.31, respectively. Larry Griffin was a qualifier in the 200m, posting a season-best time of 21.33. Robert Ibeh posted a time of 21.36, Airese Currie ran a 21.52 and Marquis Andrews finished in 21.78. In the 400m, Marquis Andrews posted a season-best time of 47.86, narrowly missing the finals. Derrick Wyatt qualified for the finals of the 1500m run, recording a time of 3:55.32. Four Tigers qualified for the finals of the 110m hurdles, led by Lydell Perry and Roy Cheney. Perry clocked a time of 14.11 and Cheney posted a 14.19 to qualify for Saturday's finals. Brent Hobbs and Rick Hill also advanced to the finals, recording times of 14.42 and 14.49, respectively. Rashad Gardner posted a time of 14.95 in the preliminaries and Scott Kautz ran a 15.13. In the 400m hurdles, all five competitors advanced to Saturday's finals, recording the top five times in the preliminary round. Roy Cheney was the top qualifier, clocking a 52.29 and Scott Kautz finished second in 52.50. Rashad Gradner posted a time of 52.81, and Lydell Perry and Michael Bolling both crossed the finish line in 52.98. Ryan Fenton earned all-conference honors in the 3000m steeplechase with a regional qualifying time of 9:05.69. Matt Pimentel ran a 30:34.66 in the 10,000m to finish seventh, bettering his previous season-best time.
 

 

George Kitchens became the first Tiger to win the long jump since Rodney Keasler claimed the title in 1989. Kitchens posted a leap of 24'6.25" to capture his first ACC title in the event. Terrance McDaniel was a scorer for the Tigers in the long jump, finishing seventh with a mark of 23'4.75". Brent Hobbs recorded a mark of 22'7.75", finishing 12th in the event. Adam Klotzbach placed seventh in the pole vault, clearing 15'7". In the discus throw, Derek Gilson took fourth place with a mark of 164'4" and Danny Alge was fifth with his mark of 160'10". Matt Lombardi was a scorer for the Tigers with a seventh-place finish and mark of 155'4". Clayton Curtis recorded a season-best mark of 196'9" in the javelin throw to earn a third-place finish and his first All-ACC honors. Ryan Hunter and Brent Hobbs also competed in the javelin, recording marks of 160'5" and 146'9", respectively.

In the decathlon, Rick Hill took the early lead, capturing the 100m dash with a time of 11.08. Brent Hobbs was second in the event in 11.12 and Ryan Hunter was fourth with a time of 11.67. Hobbs claimed the second event of the day, the long jump, with a leap of 23'11.5". Hunter posted a mark of 21'0.75" and Hill jumped 20'11.75". In the shot put, Hobbs again won the event, posting a season-best mark of 46'1.25". Hill threw 44'10.25" and Hunter had a mark of 43'9.25". In the fourth event of the day, the high jump, Hobbs led the Tigers with a second-place finish and clearance of 6'3.5". Rick Hill cleared 6'2.25" for thid place and Hunter posted a mark of 5'9.75". Hill finished the day with a win in the 1500m, crossing the finish line in 49.88. Hobbs clocked a 51.19 in the 400m and Hunter posted a time of 52.54. The decathlon competition will conclude on Saturday with the 110m hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and 1500m run.
