CLEMSON, SC - The Clemson men's track and field team competed at the 2002 Clemson Invitational on Saturday, finishing second. Purdue won the meet with 195 points, while the Tigers posted 190.50 points. Illinois finished third with 121 points and Syracuse was fourth (47 points). Virginia Tech was fifth with 27.50 points. The Tigers were led by senior Todd Matthews, who posted a provisional qualifying time of 13.74 in the 110m hurdles to lead Clemson.

Dwight Thomas claimed the 100m dash with a time of 10.46. Larry Griffin and Jacey Harper were also scorers for the Tigers in the event with fifth (10.74) and sixth (10.82) place finishes, respectively. In the 200m dash, Otto Spain led all Clemson runners with a third-place finish and time of 21.09. Larry Griffin took fourth (21.31), Ato Modibo was fifth (21.32) and Jacey Harper scored for the Tigers with a sixth-place finish in 21.50. Clemson also won the 400m dash as the Tigers' Ato Modibo claimed the race in 46.38. Otto Spain finished third (47.72), Ronald Richards was fourth (48.55) and Warren Eure was fifth (48.85). Matt Thompson tied for sixth with a time of 48.89. In the 800m run, Marcus Hodge finished second overall with a time of 1:52.11, and Garrick Copes scored with a fifth-place finish in 1:55.92. Jason Meany and Scott Shaw were third and fourth in the 1500m run with times of 3:52.26 and 3:52.75, respectively. In the 5000m run, Meany was Clemson's top finisher with a time of 15:04.53. Todd Matthews was the top collegiate finisher in the 110m hurdles with a provisional qualifying time of 13.74. Ian Potter, Shauntae Lovings and Rick Hill scored for the Tigers as well, finishing third, fourth and sixth. In the 400m hurdles, Michael Bolling finished second with a time of 52.43 and Matthews was fifth in 55.53. Clemson won the 4x100m relay with a time of 40.35, and finished second in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:12.99.

 

 

In the high jump, Terrance McDaniel placed second as he cleared 6'11"/2.11m. Doug Ameigh cleared the same height but finished tied for third. Andrew Kessler placed second in the pole vault with a mark of 16'2.75"/4.95m and Ryan Lewis and Adam Klotzbach cleared 15'3"/4.65m to score for the Tigers. George Kitchens placed third in the long jump with a mark of 23'4.5"/7.12m, and Brit Barrow was sixth (22'0.25"/6.71m). Barrow won the triple jump with a mark of 49'5"/15.06m, while McDaniel took second (48'4.75"/14.75m). In the discus throw, Matt Lombardi finished sixth with a mark of 156'11"/47.84m. Colt Hodge finished second in the hammer throw with a mark of 185'10"/56.64m, and Brett Varner was fifth (176'0"/53.66m). Doug Ameigh recorded a third-place finish and mark of 185'8"/56.60m in the javelin, and Ryan Lewis finished fifth in the event (149'2"/45.46m).
