CLEMSON, S.C. - The Clemson men's track and field team won the 2003 Clemson Invitational held at the Rock Norman Track Complex on Saturday. The Tigers tallied 236 points to win the meet, followed by Iowa State's 142 points. Appalachian State recorded 80.5 points to take third, while Charlotte was fourth with 66.5 points and East Carolina finished fifth (45 points). The Tigers won 12 events and qualified 11 student-athletes as well as the 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams for the East Region Championships.

Larry Griffin won the 100m en route to a season-best and regional-qualifying time of 10.48, while Robert Ibeh and Grafton Ifill also recorded season-best times of 10.93 and 11.03, respectively. Griffin placed fourth in the 200m in 21.78, while Ibeh was fifth (21.80) and Airese Currie took sixth in 21.81. In the 400m, Otto Spain qualified for the region meet with his time of 46.17, and Ronald Richards ran a 48.10 to place fifth. Marcus Hodge claimed the 800m with a season-best time of 1:52.91, and Itay Magidi and Mike Barton finished third and fourth in the 1500m with times of 3:52.16 and 3:54.32, respectively. Ryan Fenton won the 3,000m steeplechase with a season-best performance of 9:23.32, and David Adams placed fifth with a time of 9:37.97. Jason Meany's time of 14:24.42 in the 5000m qualified him for the region championships, and was a season-best time. Roy Cheney claimed the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.41, Rick Hill was third in 14.90, Scott Kautz took fourth (15.21), and Ryan Hunter placed fifth (15.24). In the 400m hurdles, Clemson swept the top three spots, qualifying all three hurdlers for the region meet. Michael Bolling recorded a season-best time of 52.28 to win the event, while Cheney took second (52.31) and Rashad Gardner placed third in 52.33. The Tigers' 4x100m relay team won the event with a region qualifying time of 40.21, and the 4x400m relay team also claimed that event in a qualifying time of 3:12.29.

 

 

In the field events, George Kitchens won the long jump with a regional qualifying mark of 25'0.5", while Kai Maull also qualified with his mark of 24'7" to place second. Terrance McDaniel recorded a mark of 49'7.75" in the triple jump to place second and qualify for the region meet. Brit Barrow placed third in the triple jump with his mark of 47'9.75". McDaniel won the high jump, qualifying for the region meet with a clearance of 7'1.5". In the pole vault, the Tigers took the top four places, and two Tigers qualified for the East Region Championships. Ryan Hunter won the event with his clearance of 16'0.75", while Ryan Lewis was second with the same clearance to also qualify for the region meet. Andrew Kessler cleared 15'7" to place third, and Adam Klotzbach posted a mark of 15'1". In the shot put, Derek Gilson placed second with his throw of 50'5.5", and Matt Lombardi finished third with his mark of 48'5.5". Gilson also led the Tigers in the discus throw, finishing as the runner-up with a mark of 160'10", while Rick Hill placed fifth with a mark of 133'4". Lombardi scored for the Tigers in the hammer throw with a season-best mark of 152'5", and Hunter placed sixth in the javelin with a throw of 134'7".

The Tiger track and field team returns to action on Apr. 12 at the Sea Ray Relays and NC-SC All-Star Challenge.
