CLEMSON, SC - The Clemson men's track and field team tallied 258 points behind 13 regional qualifiers to capture the 2004 Clemson Invitational held Saturday at the Rock Norman Track and Field Complex. The University of Illinois took second place with 182 points, the University of Pittsburgh placed third with 92.5 points and Arkansas State accrued 83 points for fourth place. Appalachian State was fifth with 66 points, Florida A&M finished sixth with 24.5 points, Howard University scored 17 points for seventh place and East Tennessee State rounded out the field with 10 points.

On the track for the Tigers, Airese Currie and Tye Hill were regional qualifiers in the 100m dash. Currie was the runner-up with a time of 10.48 and Hill crossed the finish line in 10.50 to take third place. Larry Griffin, George Kitchens and Ronald Richards were scorers for the Tigers with times of 10.52, 10.55 and 10.83, respectively. In the 200m dash, Tye Hill captured the title with a time of 21.24, and Richards finished in second place in 21.54. Warren Eure and Darius Acker were fifth and seventh with times of 21.79 and 21.86, respectively. Eure was the top finisher for the Tigers in the 400m with a fourth-place finish and time of 48.63, while Acker recorded a time of 49.00 to finish eighth and score for Clemson. In the 800m, Derrick Wyatt posted a sixth-place finish and time of 1:53.50. Matt Clark was the third-place finisher in the 1500m with a time of 3:51.52 and Wyatt recorded a time of 3:52.14 to finish fourth in the event. Clemson took first and second in the 5000m run, as Ryan Fenton won the event with a time of 14:56.06. Matt Pimentel was the runner-up with his time of 15:05.87, and Eric Soder crossed the finish line in 15:15.86 to place fifth. David Smith and Greg Isaacs also scored for Clemson in the 5000m, recording seventh and eighth-place finishes with times of 15:22.03 and 15:25.13, respectively. In the 110m hurdles, Lydell Perry, Roy Cheney and Brent Hobbs all qualified for the region meet. Perry led the Tigers with a time of 14.16 and third-place finish, while Cheney finished in 14.25 to place fourth. Hobbs clocked a 14.33 to place fifth. Scott Kautz and Cheney qualified for the East Region Championships in the 400m hurdles. Kautz was the runner-up with a time of 51.69 and Cheney crossed the finish line in 52.30 to place fourth. Rashad Gardner was sixth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 53.74 and Lydell Perry scored for Clemson with an eighth-place finish and time of 54.48. In the first running event of the day, Sean Reilly took third place in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:33.20. Clemson's 4x100m relay team of Larry Griffin, Tye Hill, Ronald Richards and Airese Currie won the event with a regional qualifying time of 39.91, and the Tigers were fourth in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:17.17.
 

 

Adam Linkenauger cleared 6'11" in the high jump to claim the event and qualify for the region meet, and Terrance McDaniel was third with a mark of 6'7". Ben Daniels also scored for Clemson in the high jump with a fifth-place finish and clearance of 6'5". Adam Klotzbach and Ryan Hunter were scorers for Clemson in the pole vault. Klotzbach cleared 15'11.75" to place second and Hunter was fourth with a mark of 15'5.75". George Kitchens was a regional qualifier in the long jump, claiming the event with a leap of 24'7". Brent Hobbs placed third in the long jump with his mark of 22'8.5". Jason Bell was the top Tiger finisher in the triple jump, recording a mark of 48'3.5" to place second. Ben Daniels was fourth in the triple jump with his mark of 47'7.25". In the shot put, Derek Gilson was a regional qualifier with a mark of 55'1" to win the event. Matt Lombardi also qualified for the region championships with a throw of 54'1.75" to place fourth. Gilson also claimed the discus throw, recording a throw of 170'10", another regional qualifying mark and fourth on the Tigers' all-time list. Ryan Hunter also scored for Clemson in the discus, finishing eighth with a mark of 141'1". The Tigers took third through fifth in the hammer throw, as Danny Alge recorded a mark of 177'5" to lead Clemson and move into fifth on the Tigers' all-time list. Gilson was fourth in the hammer with a mark of 168'2" and Lombardi took fifth with a throw of 159'3". Clayton Curtis finished fourth in the javelin throw with his mark of 195'4" and Brandon Holmes posted a mark of 164'2" to place seventh. Ryan Hunter recorded a mark of 160'0" to score for Clemson with an eighth-place finish.

Clemson returns to action on Apr. 10 as the Tigers travel to Athens, GA, for the Spec Towns Invitational.
