Clemson, SC -- Damiisa Robinson came back from a one-set deficit to defeat Andrew Hamar 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 as the 66th-ranked Clemson Men's Tennis team defeated No. 37 Wake Forest 4-3 at Hoke Sloan Tennis Center on Wednesday afternoon.

Robinson, a senior from Washington, DC, broke Hamar's serve two straight times in the final set to earn the victory at number five singles.

The match started with Wake Forest gaining a victory at number three doubles as Andrew Simpson and Todd Paul defeated Ryan Young and Brett Twente 8-6. Clemson evened the doubles action as John Boetsch and Robinson downed Hamar and David Loewenthal 8-6 at number two doubles. Wake Forest was able to earn the doubles point as Derrick Spice and Brett Ross upset the 32nd-ranked doubles team of Nathan Thompson and Jarmaine Jenkins 9-8 (5) at number one doubles.

Wake Forest quickly took a 2-0 victory as Ross defeated John Boetsch 6-1, 6-4 at number four singles. Clemson pulled to within 2-1 as Nathan Thompson defeated 51st-ranked Spice 6-0, 6-2 at the top singles position. Clemson evened the match at 2-2 as Jarmaine Jenkins downed Loewenthal 6-4, 6-3 at number three singles. Again, Wake Forest took the edge as Paul topped Goran Sterijovski 7-6 (5), 6-3 at the number two position. Ryan Young withstood a terrific second set effort by Liron Strauss to earn the 6-0, 7-6 (7) victory at number six singles. Damiisa Robinson was then able to clinch the win for the Tigers as he topped the 117th-ranked Hamar to give Clemson its fourth straight win.

 

 

"This was another big win for our program," said head coach Chuck Kriese. "We have always known that we were a good team, and now we know that we are a clutch team. We came up big in some close matches, and have some momentum for the end of the season."

With the win, Clemson improves to 20-10 overall, and evens its Atlantic Coast Conference record at 4-4. The Tigers return to action on Saturday when it plays host to future ACC member Miami at noon at Hoke Sloan Tennis Center.
