Raleigh, NC -- The Clemson Men's Tennis Team earned a hard fought 4-3 decision over North Carolina State on Sunday afternoon in grueling outdoor conditions. The Tigers are now 19-10 on the season and improve to 3-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The match began with Clemson earning the doubles point, taking two of three matches from the Wolfpack. Nathan Thompson and Jarmaine Jenkins were able to get past Jon Davis and Will Shaw at number one doubles 8-6. Clemson secured the doubles point as John Boetsch and Damiisa Robinson defeated Andre Iriarte and Conor Taylor 8-6 at the number two position. Brett Twente and Ryan Young suffered their first loss of the season as they fell to Val Banada and William Noblitt 8-5 at number three doubles.

Clemson extended its lead to 2-0 over NC State as Ryan Young made quick work of Noblitt 6-1, 6-3 at number six singles. Young, a freshman from Charleston, is now 17-8 on the season, and has won his last three matches. The Tigers built on its lead at the number four spot as senior John Boetsch downed Iriarte 6-2, 6-2. Clemson clinched the match as senior Goran Sterijovski defeated Banada 7-5, 6-4 at number two singles. The remaining three matches were each decided in three sets. Nathan Thompson fell to No. 72 Conor Taylor in a third set tiebreaker 6-7, 7-5, 12-10 at number one singles. Davis downed Damiisa Robinson 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 at the number five spot, and Shaw defeated Jarmaine Jenkins 6-7, 6-3, 7-6 at number three singles.

 

 

"This was a hard fought victory for our team," said head coach Chuck Kriese. "We had to battle through 30 mph winds, and the guys showed a lot of heart. This is a great victory for our team, and hopefully we can continue this success next week against Wake Forest."

Clemson improves to 19-10 on the season, 3-4 in the ACC. The Tigers return to action on Wednesday as they play host to Wake Forest at 2 p.m. at the Hoke Sloan Tennis center.
