Clemson Falls To Santa Clara In Men's Tennis, 5-2
March 23, 2002
BERKELEY, CA - The Santa Clara University men's tennis team won five out six singles matches to defeat Clemson 5-2 in a non-conference match hosted by the University of California's Hellman Tennis Center this afternoon. The Tigers grabbed the first point of the match by taking No. 1 and 2 doubles, including Goran Sterijovski and Sander Koning's 8-6 victory at the top of the lineup over the Bronco's Erich Chen and Michael Bruggemann. At No. 2 doubles, Clemson's duo of Marko Gojanovic and Nathan Thompson won in convincing fashion over Chris Lam and Rick Russo by a score of 8-2. In singles action, Sterijovski won in straight sets over Santa Clara's Michael Duong in the No. 1 position, but the Broncos rebounded and won the remaining five singles matches to clinch the victory. Rain delayed the match three hours. Clemson will next take on North Carolina in a key ACC match next Friday in Chapel Hill. The Tigers will enter that match with a 1-1 record in the conference.
