Virginia Commonwealth Downs Clemson

Montgomery, Ala. - Virginia Commonwealth downed Clemson 4-0 in men's tennis action in a match completed late Thursday evening in Montgomery, AL. Both teams are competing in the 18-team Blue-Gray Tennis Classic. Clemson will have consolation round matches Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Virginia Commonwealth, ranked 13th in the nation, improved to 11-5 for the season, while 40th-ranked Clemson fell to 3-8. Six of Clemson's eight losses are to top 25 teams. Clemson was playing without its number-one player, Josh Goffi, who is out with an injury. Virginia Commonwealth took the first three singles matches in straight sets. Florian Marquardt, the number-five doubles player in the United States, downed Clemson's Marko Gojanovic, 6-3, 6-2 at the number-one singles match. Daniel Casquero of Virginia Commonwealth defeated Clemson's Lee Taylor Walker, 7-5, 6-3 to clinch the match at number-five singles. The other two singles matches and the doubles matches were cancelled once VCU clinched the overall match.
