Clemson's Sprengelmeyer Loses in NCAA Tennis Tournament

LOS ANGELES -- Middle Tennessee State's Anthony DeLuise defeated Clemson's Mitch Sprengelmeyer (Florence, SC) 6-3, 7-6 in the first round of the NCAA Men's Tennis Individual Tournament at Los Angeles, CA Wednesday afternoon.

DeLuise was unseeded in the tournament, while Sprengelmeyer was seeded 9-16 in the event. The NCAA Individual Tournament comprises the top 64 singles players and the top 32 doubles teams from across the country.

Sprengelmeyer was Clemson's only singles entry. Clemson's doubles team of Sprengelmeyer and Bruce Li will start play in the NCAA doubles tournament Thursday. The Clemson duo will play Hisham Herneda and Eddie Jacques of Georgia in the first round.

Sprengelmeyer finishes the season with a 36-7 record overall in singles.

Sprengelmeyer is ranked 12th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles poll.

The doubles team of Mitch Sprengelmeyer and Bruce Li are ranked 23rd.
