CLEMSON, S.C. - Forward John Wilson scored the game's only goal early in the first half in leading 20th ranked Clemson to a 1-0 win over Campbell in men's college soccer action at Riggs Field Friday night. It was the season opener for both teams. Clemson is ranked 20th in the preseason National soccer coache's Association.
Wilson, a native of Seneca, SC, scored the goal just 5:15 into the game. The junior forward fired a shot from the left and it was deflected by a Campbell defender. The ball trickled back to Wilson, who fired another diagonal shot from 12 yards out into the right wall of the net.
Clemson was without the services of starting goal keeper Matt Jordan, who is playing with the United States World University Games team in Italy. He should be back for next weekend's games with St. Louis and Indiana.
In his absence, Josh Campbell recorded a shutout. Campbell had played in just five games last year, but did the job on Friday.
Clemson is now 28-2-1 in season opening games since the sport was started at Clemson in 1967. Clemson is now 24-1-1 when opening at home over the years.
