CLEMSON, SC--Jody DeBruin scored one goal and assisted on the other in leading Clemson to a 2-0 upset win over sixth-ranked South Carolina in a men's intercollegiate soccer match at Clemson, SC Sunday afternoon.
With the win, Clemson is now 6-4-2 overall, while South Carolina falls to 6-2-1 this season. South Carolina is ranked sixth by Soccer America and 15th in the NSCAA (coaches') poll.
Clemson struck first at the 38:59 mark. Mike Potempa passed the ball to Jody DeBruin. DeBruin's shot was deflected and Wojciech Krakowiak knocked the ball in from six yards out to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. This was Krakowiak's fifth goal of the season.
The Tigers added the second goal with 75:13 gone. Bob Cavanaugh sent a long leading pass to DeBruin on the right side. The pass created a one-on-one situation between DeBruin and South Carolina's goalkeeper Henry Ring. DeBruin sent a diagonal shot to the left and into the back of the net giving the Tigers a 2-0 advantage. This was DeBruins' fifth goal this year.
This is the second year in a row that Clemson has defeated South Carolina. Last season the Tigers were 3-1 winners in Columbia, SC.
This also marked the second Sunday in a row that Clemson has defeated a top 25 ranked team. Last Sunday the Tigers defeated ninth-ranked Portland 3-0.
Clemson will play host to Georgia State on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. in the Tigers' next action.
