Bruce Murray is considered one of the best soccer players of all-time at Clemson. He played for Coach Ibrahim and the Tigers from 1984-87. During this stint, he was a member of two different national championship teams. Murray was named the National Rookie-of-the-Year in 1984. He also collected All-American honors during the 1985 and 1987 seasons. For his performance during the 1987 season, he was the recipient of the Hermann Award (equivalent to the football's Heisman Trophy) and named the Intercollegiate Soccer Association of America Player-of-the-Year.
Murray was instrumental in the Tigers winning the 1987 National Championship. He scored the winning goals in three consecutive NCAA Tournament road games in victories over Evansville, Indiana, and Rutgers. Thus, the tournament and winning the National Championship on Riggs Field was a fitting end to Murray's Clemson career.
Upon leaving Clemson, Murray went on to set a record for most appearances for the United States National Team and was a member of the 1988 U.S. Olympic team. Murray is still in the top ten for goals, points, assists, and games played at Clemson. He was also the first, and still only the second player, ever to reach Clemson's 40-40 club (40 goals and 40 assists).
