Clemson, SC - The Clemson golf team will play its last tournament of the fall season beginning Sunday, October 21st in the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational in Windermere, FL. The University of Central Florida will play host to the 18-team event that includes seven of the top 10 teams in the nation.
Clemson, currently ranked 18th in the latest coaches' poll, is coming off a second place finish out of 13 teams at The Brickyard in Macon, GA. The Tigers were led by sophomore Kyle Stanley, who posted a seve- under par 209 for a seventh place finish. Close behind were Tanner Ervin at 10th, Luke Hopkins at 11th, and Sam Saunders at 14th. The Tigers were 25-under-par as a team at the event, tied for the ninth best score versus par in Clemson history and the best performance since he 2005 ACC Tournament.
Saunders, a sophomore, will lead the Tigers at the Isleworth Country Club, as he is a native of Windermere, FL. The course was designed by his grandfather, golf legend Arnold Palmer. Saunders has a team-leading 73.17 stroke average through two tournaments so far this season. Kyle Stanley will also be competing for the Tigers. He currently has a 73.67 stroke average through two tournaments and is coming off his first top 10 finish of the season at The Brickyard. Stanley was named the ACC Player of the Year and a first-team All-American as a freshman.
Joining Saunders and Stanley are Luke Hopkins, Tanner Ervin, and Ben Martin. Hopkins and Martin, both red-shirt sophomores, each has a 73.33 stroke average through three tournaments. Hopkins' best finish so far is his 11th place mark at The Brickyard, while Martin earned a top 10 at the Topy Cup in early September. Ervin, a red-shirt senior, also has a stroke average of 73.33 and recently finished 10th at The Brickyard.
Other teams competing in the tournament include Oklahoma State, Georgia Tech, Georgia, Southern California, Florida State, South Carolina, and Stanford, ranked third through ninth in the nation, respectively. Stanford is the defending NCAA Champion. Also included are defending tournament champion Texas and 14th-ranked Wake Forest.
