Clemson, SC -- Clemson junior Kyle Stanley and freshman Jacob Burger were both eliminated from the United States Amateur at Pinehurst #2 on Thursday. They had both reached the final 32 of the event with victories on Wednesday, but suffered defeats on Thursday morning. Had they both won, they would have played each other in the round of 16 later in the day.

Stanley lost to Connor McHenry of Jefferson City, MO, 1-up. It marked the second straight year that Stanley has lost in the second round of the US Amateur by a 1-up score. The Clemson All-American never trailed until the 15th hole. He scored a birdie on the second hole to take a 1-up lead, then won the fourth hole with a par to go 2-up. He was still 1-up after a birdie on the par four 12th hole that is 449 yards in length.

McHenry, a member of the Wichita State golf team, won the 14th and 15th holes to go from 1-down to 1-up. The two players then halved the 16th, 17th and 18th holes, giving McHenry the victory.

Burger lost 5 & 4 to the number-one amateur in the world, Danny Lee, an 18-year-old from New Zealand. Lee has been one of the hottest amateur golfers in the nation this summer and had recently won the Western Amateur. Burger won the first hole, but Lee went on a hot streak. He won the 5th, 7th, 8th, 10th and 11th holes with birdies. He birdied six of the first 12 holes.

Burger won the 13th hole with a birdie, but when both players made birdie at the 14th hole, the match was over. Burger played even par golf, but still lost 5 & 4 to Lee. Lee then went on to beat McHenry 7 & 6 to advance to the quarterfinals.
