Clemson, SC - Kyle Stanley led four Clemson golfers at the US Amateur with an opening round 70 on Monday.   It was the first round of two rounds of medal play qualifying at the 2008 United States Amateur at Pinehurst, NC.  All 312 players compete over 36 holes of qualifying on Pinehurst #2 and Pinehurst #4.  The low 64 players will move on to match play on Wednesday.

Stanley shot an even par 70 on Pinehurst #4 and stands in a tie for 21st place overall. Classmate Sam Saunders also played Pinehurst #4 and shot a one over par score of 71 and stands in 36th place.

Incoming freshman Jacob Burger double bogeyed the first hole on Pinehurst #2, then made a birdie on the eighth hole and score par on the other 16 holes to score a 71. Burger tied for 10th among th 156 players who played Pinehurst #2 on Monday. Anderson, SC native Phillip Mollica shot a 73 on Pinehurst number -four and is in 90th position.
