Clemson, SC - Clemson rising sophomore Phillip Mollica won the Monroe Invitational amateur golf tournament June 17 in Pittsford, NY with a score of eight-under-par 272. Mollica became the third Clemson player in the last five years to win the event, following D.J. Trahan (2002) and Brent Delahoussaye (2003).
Mollica, a native of Anderson, SC who played in five tournaments for the Tigers this past year, led wire-to-wire on the par 70 course that was designed by Donald Ross. He became the first player to lead after each of the four rounds since the event went to stroke play in 1998.
Mollica had rounds of 65-67-71-69 in defeating Duke player Michael Qualgliano by two shots. Brendan Gielow was third with a 275 total, while Dustin Johnson, an All-American at Coastal Carolina and Dawie Van der Walt were tied for fifth at 278.
David May was the only other current Clemson golfer in the event. The native of Auburn, NY had a 291 total for his four rounds and finished 28th.
