Three Tigers Named All-American
June 3, 2001
Clemson, SC - Clemson seniors John Engler and Lucas Glover were both named first-team All-Americans by the Golf Coaches Association on Sunday. Sophomore D.J. Trahan, Clemson's top performer at the NCAA national tournament over the weekend, was named an honorable mention All-American. All three golfers were major reasons Clemson finished second in the nation at the NCAA tournament held this pastweekend at Duke University. The second-place finish tied for the best in school history. Engler and Glover were also starters on that 1998 Clemson team that finished second to UNLV in the national tournament held in Albuquerque, NM. Clemson finished in the top 10 in the nation all four years of the Glover-Engler era. Clemson and Florida were the only schools to have two players on the 11-man first team. The Florida representatives were NCAA medallist Nick Gilliam, and freshman Camilo Villegas. Also named to the first-team were Nick Cassini of Georgia, Luke Donald of Northwestern, Anders Hultman of Oklahoma State, Matt Jones of Arizona State, Jon Mills of Kent State, Bryce Molder of Georgia Tech and Chris Wisler of East Tennessee State. This is the second time Engler and Glover have been named to the first-team All-American squad. Engler was named first team in 1999, then was named to the second-team last year. Glover has been named to the first-team each of the last two years after being named an honorable mention All-American in 1999. Engler and Glover join Chris Patton (1989-90) and Charles Warren (1997-98) as the only two-time first-team All-Americans in Clemson golf history. Engler joins Patton and Warren as the only Tigers in history to be named first, second or third-team All-American three times. This past year, Engler won the ACC Tournament with a 203 score. He posted a 70.87 stroke average for the year, an all-time Clemson single season record. He also set a school mark for rounds at par-or-better in a season with 31. He was 38-under-par for his 39 rounds of golf this past season. Glover won the San Juan Classic in February and had a 71.18 stroke average for the year. That stroke average is second best in Clemson history for a season, second only to Engler's 70.87. Glover led the Clemson team in rounds in the 60s with 13 and he had 28 rounds at par or better, including 22 rounds that were under par. Glover was 26-under-par for his 39 rounds this year. Both Glover and Engler will compete for the United States in the Palmer Cup later this month at Baltusrol in New Jersey. Trahan finished seventh at the NCAA Tournament this past weekend with a 283 score. He is now 11-under par for his eight NCAA National rounds. He finished 15th in 2000 at the event and is the first Clemson golfer to finish in the top 15 at the NCAAs as a freshman and sophomore. For the year, Trahan had a 72.48 stroke average, the exact same average he had as a freshman. He had 15 rounds that were under par and had three top 10 finishes in 2000-01.
