Clemson, SC - Clemson golfers David May and Phillip Mollica, and assistant coach Jordan Byrd, all advanced through local qualifying for the US Open on Monday. The three golfers with Clemson ties capture three of the seven spots available in the 100-player local qualifying field at Columbia Country Club in Columbia, SC.
May won individual medallist honors with a 67 on Monday. Mollica, a native of Anderson, SC, birdied his last three holes to fire a 69 and also advance. Byrd was one of three players who shot 71 and went into a playoff for two spots. Byrd advanced after the first playoff hole.
May, Mollica and Byrd will play in the US Open Sectional at Woodmont Country Club in Maryland in early June.
Current Clemson golfers Tanner Ervin (73), Ben Martin (73) and Zack Siefert (76) also competed at Columbia Country Club on Monday, but failed to advance.
Clemson freshman Kyle Stanley, who finished third at the NCAA East Regional last weekend, had qualified for the US Open Sectional round last week. He will compete in Columbus, OH the Monday after the Memorial PGA Tournament in June.
Former Clemson all-American Lucas Glover has already qualified for the US Open at Oakmont (June 14-17) by virtue of his top 30 PGA Tour money list finish last year.
Other former Clemson golfers currently on the PGA Tour will compete in Sectional qualifying in June.
