Bobby Robinson was a part of Clemson University athletics for almost 30 years. He originally served as golf coach from 1974-83. During that time, he brought the program its first ACC Championship in 1982, and then delivered the program's first top five national finish in 1983. He stepped down as golf coach to become athletic director.

Robinson's time as athletic director (1985-2002) was full of accomplishments, recognitions, and achievements. During this time, Clemson won 57 ACC Championships. Also, all 19 of Clemson's sports programs were ranked in the top 20 at one time or another. Additionally, 12 different programs were ranked in the top five nationally. In the 17 years under Robinson's leadership, nine times Clemson was ranked in the top 25 nationally in the All-Sports rankings.

In addition to these accomplishments, Robinson was honored by the state of South Carolina in 2001 when he was presented the Order of the Palmetto for his service to the state. It was also under his leadership and vision that Clemson opened Vickery Hall in 1991. When it opened, Vickery Hall was the first stand-alone facility for student-athlete enrichment in the nation. Since that time, many schools have followed in line and opened similar facilities. Robins was inducted into the Clemson Hall of Fame in 2002.
