HOT SPRINGS, Va. -- Charles Warren fired a three-under par 67, the only under par round of the day, leading Clemson to a 289 team total and a second-place ranking after 36 holes of the NCAA East Regional at the Cascades Course in Hot Springs, Va.
Wake Forest leads the field of 23 teams with a 583 score, but Clemson is just one stroke behind at 584. Clemson shot a 9-over-par 289 as a team on Friday, the low team round of the day by six strokes. Warren is the individual leader after 36 holes with a 137, three-under-par. The Clemson junior is the only player under par after two rounds and he has a four-shot lead over NC State's Tim Clark.
The final round of the tournament will be held on Saturday. The top 11 teams will advance to the NCAA Finals in Chicago May 28-31. Clemson is attempting to advance to the finals for the 16th straight year. The Tigers are 23 strokes ahead of the 11th place team heading into the final day.
Warren finished his round with a flourish, birdies on the last two holes. He missed a hole in one on the 18th by two inches. It was the ninth time in his last 11 rounds that Warren shot par or better. Warren has three straight top 10 finishes heading into this tournament.
Joey Maxon was Clemson's second best golfer on Friday and has the second best Clemson score in the event. The junior is tied for 8th place with a 145 score, five-over-par on the par 70, 6610 yard track. Maxon had a 72 on Friday and is tied with four golfers, including South Carolina's Eric Ecker.
Richard Coughlan and Jonathan Byrd are both tied for 39th with scores of 151. Coughlan birdied two of his last three holes on Friday and shot a 74, while Byrd had a 76. Elliot Gealy had a 77 on Friday, including a solid 36 on the back nine, and is at 157.
Clemson is in the hunt for the team championships. Clemson has won the team title at the East Regional three of the last four years.
