LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Jonathan Byrd and Charles Warren both finished in the top five individually, leading the fourth-ranked Clemson golf team to a second place finish at the Liberty Golf Classic at the Waters Edge in Lynchburg, VA. Ten teams competed in the warmup for the NCAA regional Tournament, which will begin at Homestead in Hot Springs, VA next weekend.
It will be Clemson's 16th straight NCAA Tournament appearance, 14 have come under the guidance of Larry Penley, who was named ACC Coach of the Year on Friday.
The Tigers finished second to East Tennessee State. The Tigers had a team score of 585, 12 shots behind the Bucs, who will also compete in the NCAAs next week. Furman had a strong showing and was third, while Georgia Tech was fourth.
ETSU had the top three finishers individually. Byrd, who was named first team All-ACC earlier on Friday, shot a 70 and finished at 143, good enough for fourth place. ACC Champion Charles Warren was tied for fifth with NC State's Tim Clark at 144, even par.
Sean Thornton was the next Tiger with a 150 score and was tied for 16th, his highest individual finish as a Clemson golfer. Eliott Gealy, who was Clemson's top golfer in the first round with a 72, had an 80 in the second round and was tied for 30th. Joey Maxon shot a 153 for the 36-hole event and was 36th.
Clemson played without ACC Co Player of the Year Richard Coughlan, who missed the tournament so he could go through Clemson graduation ceremonies this past Wednesday. Coughlan is ranked among the top 15 players in the country and was named co-player of the year along with Tim Clark of NC State.
