TIGERS CONTINUE NATIONAL TRADITION
Clemson advanced to the
nationals for the 15th straight year in 1996, 13 of which have
been coached by current mentor Larry Penley, an all-time record
for a Clemson coach regardless of sport. The former Clemson
player is one of three coaches nationally to take a team to the
NCAAs 13 straight years and Clemson is one of just four programs
to advance to the national tournament for 15 straight years.
COUGHLAN, MAXON, WARREN PICKED AS ALL-AMERICANS
Charles Warren
was picked as a third team All-American , while teammates
Richard Coughlan and Joey Maxonwere chosen as honorable mention
All-Americans in 1996. For all three players it was the first
time they were named All-Americans. In addition to their
All-American status, all three players were tabbed All-ACC. For
Coughlan it was his second selection to the team, while Maxon
and Warren were making their first appearances.
TIGERS RECORD NINE TOP-FIVE FINISHES
As a team Larry Penley's
club has recorded nine top-five finishes during the 1995-96
season, including five top-three finishes, and one tournament
win in the Carpet Capital Classic. The nine top-five finishes
are the most since the 1992-93 season. That was the season that
Clemson claimed the first of its three consecutive NCAA East
Regional titles. That year the Tigers recorded 10 top-five
finishes.
CLEMSON FINISHES THE SEASON RANKED EIGHTH
The Clemson golf team
finished the 1996 season ranked eighth in the nation according
to the Rolex Collegiate rankings. It is the tenth straight
season that Larry Penley's club is ranked among the top-20.
Individually, All-American Charles Warren finished 15th in the
Nicklaus Award Rankings. Richard Coughlan finished the '96
season 29th.
MAXON FINISHES IN A FIRST PLACE TIE AT WOFFORD INVITATIONAL
Spartanburg, SC--
Thunderstorms washed away the final round of
the 1996 Wofford Invitational at the Carolina Country Club in
Spartanburg on March 16th. Clemson's Joey Maxon finished in a
tie for medalist honors. Maxon fired rounds of 71 and 70 on the
first day to tie with Garrett Willis of East Tennessee State and
David Patrick of the College of Charleston. As a team the Tigers
finished second, one stroke back of Wake Forest. After opening
with a 300 in the first round, Clemson bounced back with its
third lowest round of the season, a 282 in the second round.
Sophomore Charles Warren claimed his fifth top-10 finish of the
season. Warren finished eighth after rounds of 73 and 72. Maxon
is Clemson's first medalist since Mark Swygert won the 1994 NCAA
East Regional.
CLEMSON WINS CARPET CAPITAL GOLF CLASSIC
The Clemson golf team
claimed its first tournament title of the 1996 season with a win
at the Carpet Capital Classic played at The Farm Golf Course in
Dalton, GA, March 29-31. The Tigers, ranked eighth nationally at
the time, finished 14 strokes ahead of second place Wake Forest
and North Carolina. Clemson recorded a three day team total of
869, the best finish by the Tigers this season. Larry Penley's
club fired a final day score of 295 to preserve the win as
Clemson held the tournament lead from start to finish. Pacing
the Tigers was sophomore Joey Maxon (Dover, DE) who finished
second individually. For the tournament, Maxon had rounds of
65, 75, and 73 to finish at -3.
COUGHLAN FINISHES THIRD AT ACC TOURNAMENT
Junior Richard
Coughlan finished third at the ACC Tournament, it is his second
top-three career finish at the conference championship. In 1995,
Coughlan finished second in the tournament firing a 211 (-5).
Combining total strokes from the past two seasons, Coughlan has
the best total. Last season, Coughlan had five top-10 finishes,
this season he already has five.
LARRY PENLEY NAMED ACC COACH-OF-THE-YEAR
During the '96 campaign
Larry Penley was tabbed as the ACC Coach-of-the-Year for the
second time in his career. Penley has been coach at Clemson for
13 seasons and has taken each of his teams to the NCAA National
Tournament . He is one of only three coaches in the nation to
accomplish that feat.
PENLEY UPDATE
The Carpet Capital Classic was Clemson's 32nd
tournament title during the tenure of head coach Larry Penley.
With the four second place finishes Clemson has this season, the
total under Penley comes to 27. The Tigers have 107 top-five
finishes under the head coach of 13 years.
